GLP-1 Weight Management in St. Johns, FL

Weight management medication is a medical decision, not a purchase. This page explains what GLP-1 medications are, who they may suit, and what they can do to you as well as for you.

What GLP-1 Medications Are

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. It is a hormone your gut releases after you eat, and it signals fullness while helping regulate blood sugar.

GLP-1 receptor agonists are prescription medications that act on that same receptor. GLP-1 is a class of medicine, not one product. Semaglutide is the most widely known, and the products within the class are not interchangeable.

These are prescription drugs. They require a medical evaluation before treatment and supervision during it.

How They Work

Acting on GLP-1 receptors produces a few effects at once:

  • Reduced appetite, and fewer intrusive thoughts about food
  • Slower stomach emptying, so meals hold you longer
  • Steadier blood sugar after eating

Most people end up eating less without fighting hunger all day. How strongly you respond is individual, and some people respond very little.

What Treatment Looks Like

Dosing starts low and steps up over time. That process is called titration, and it exists to limit side effects while your body adjusts.

The medications we prescribe are given as a once-weekly injection. Your provider shows you how to administer it and confirms your schedule before you start.

You will have regular check-ins. We go over side effects, your weight trend, and whether the current dose still makes sense.

Who May Be a Candidate

Eligibility is decided at a medical evaluation, not by a checklist on a website.

Who Should Not Use These Medications

Tell your provider before starting if any of these apply to you:

  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
  • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
  • A previous serious allergic reaction to a GLP-1 medication
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy

Also tell your provider about any history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, severe gastrointestinal disease, or diabetic retinopathy.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

The common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Fatigue and injection site reactions also happen.

These are usually worst in the days after a dose increase, and they often settle as your body adjusts.

Less common but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney injury caused by dehydration from vomiting or diarrhea. Severe allergic reactions are possible.

If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, your risk of low blood sugar rises. Your provider may need to adjust those medications.

Losing weight quickly can cost you muscle along with fat. Protein intake and resistance training help protect against that.

Seek medical care right away for severe, persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it comes with vomiting.

What GLP-1 Therapy Is Not

It is not a cosmetic treatment and it is not a shortcut. It is a prescription drug with real risks that needs medical oversight.

It is not suitable for everyone, and it does not work equally well for everyone who takes it.

It also does not replace how you eat and move. When medication stops, appetite generally returns and weight regain is common.

About the Medication We Prescribe

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in FDA-approved brand-name products. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved.

Your provider will tell you exactly what is being prescribed, why it was chosen for you, and where it is sourced, before you begin treatment.

How GLP-1 Fits Into Our Program

GLP-1 therapy is one part of our Medical Weight Loss Program, not the whole of it. The program adds lab review, monitoring, nutrition support, and dose management over time.

Losing weight quickly also changes your face, your skin, and your muscle mass. Because we are a full medical spa, those changes can be treated in the same practice. See what that includes.

In St. Johns, FL

Timelines vary. Appetite often shifts in the first few weeks, while weight change is gradual. Your provider tracks your progress at each visit.

Yes. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation are the most common. Serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Read the safety section on this page, and raise any concerns with your provider.

No. It is not appropriate for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, and it is not used during pregnancy. A medical evaluation determines whether it suits you.

There is no required diet, but what you eat matters more once you are eating less. We focus on protein, fiber, and hydration.

That depends on how you respond, your health, and your goals. Some people continue long term and others taper off. You and your provider decide together.

Appetite generally returns, and weight regain is common. We work on habits from the start so the result does not rest on medication alone.
